A couple of years a gor I used interlux anti skid on the deck. I haven't been happy with it. This spring I am going to redo the deck and was thinking of using Kiwigrip. Has anyone used it and care to comment?

toe rails- I have had difficulty getting the 30 year old teak toe rails to hold varnish. I'm thinking of painting them or possibly using a stain to penetrate the wood. I leaning towards painting because it will be more maintenance free. As a woodworker though I'm having a hard time committing to painting teak. Any suggestions?

what are you not happy with?

I note that 3 years ago with Interdeck I had to
1. mix with white to get a light enough gray color
2. added way extra grit forward of the shrouds
3. extra grit on side decks
4. only used out of can in cockpit.
5. I did paint the teak foot stops in the cockpit ... no problem ... if I were to do toe rail would be the out of can mix.
6. I also did paint the old tiller with out of can because I put that on for the summer layover ... that has held up well.

but it does touch up pretty well and is pretty cheap considering that it is in tropical sun all year.

my only prep was power washing.

First time I did it the Gray was to dark, making the deck to hot to walk on. I painted over it with a lighter gray, the deck is now to slippery. How much anti-skid did you end up using?

Today I talked to Brian, skipper of #22, and he did do Kiwigrip on #22 and is very happy with it ... BUT he did experiment with the companionway sliding hatch cover which he took off the boat to play with at home ... his main advice is that you have to use the texturing roller as the stuff starts to harden to get an agressive surface. Otherwise it seems to want to lie down 'non agressive'

I think Bill [Rhapsody] will agree that my foredecks are pretty agressive, he's seen both boat decks which are same, same.

with older and younger crews ... i feel better with an agressive deck on foredeck. No one is worried about slipping ... which is nice.
And we have only had blood scrapes once in 3 years, but that person remained on boat.

I just can't understand the logic behind interdeck using such a dark gray.

I also used same program on a 79 J24 ... and that worked out as well ... from Vee Jay left overs in can mix, and 1x and 4x versions of grit. I used petit 9900 skidless compound from ebay.

I went with the dark gray thinking it wouldn't show the dirt. Did think it would get that hot here in Iowa. Clearly a poor choice. The white gets dirty fast and can be hard on the eyes. My problems arose when I recoated with a light gray paint. The interlux went on easily. I read similar accounts about Kiwi drying quickly.
Did it take 2 quarts to do the deck?

well you can cook on that dark gray down here in Naples ... where we've had more low 80s this winter than not.

I'm thinking Brian said to do Kiwi the way he wanted it was 2 gals. [which basically means that 1 gal was not enough]. that Kiwi goes on thick ... jeff smith also used it and there is a post on that somewhere here as well.

I used Kiwi Grip on #532 and my foredeck crew loved it! You can add more texture where needed by using the textured roller.

Being in Canada the light gray was perfect

Last Spring I used the White KG tinted to an off white (very light grey) by my local hardware store. Gorgeous! But after a season of racing and cruising, it is pretty scuffed up, i.e. permanently dirty. I only needed a a quart and a half for good coverage and aggressive non skid all over the deck, so I have plenty of the gallon left for a redo, but I don't want to make painting the deck another yearly chore. I have used hiking shoes as my deck shoes and will definitely have to revisit that this year.

Three years ago when I bought the boat, I sanded, bleached and masked the toe rails, grab rails etc. I used 3 coats of Natural Teak Cetol, followed by 2 coats of the Cetol High Gloss while the boat was on jack stands, working from a ladder. Gorgeous! I lightly sanded the rails and added another 2 coats of high Gloss this past fall, just for maintenance.

Now I need to learn how to match gel coat to repair a few gouges, complements of Sandy.

My toe rails were nice and glossy and my crew hates them! Way too slippery! I am letting them go back to natural so your shoes will actually grip the teak.

The Olson 40 I race on has Kiwigrip. Definitely nice stuff, but the white does start to look dirty after a bit.
