We have the Yanmar service manuals on the J/30 website. Mouse over "Info" at the top menu and click on "Diesel Engine Maintenance". Once there, scroll down to the bottom of the page for links to download the various manuals for your particular engine. They have very good instructions and drawings.
I didn't have any problem pulling them out of my 2GM. You may need to twist them to break the seal, but they should pull out after that. I used channel locks to twist them and they came out ok.
Bill, it was less than 5 minutes to remove both of the injectors from start to finish. Both just pulled out with little to no resistance. It actually took longer to move the stairs and pull out the tools.
I found a nice YouTube video(Clean injectors on Yanmar Diesel.mp4) which convinced me to take them to a local diesel injector shop. They rebuilt them, new copper gaskets, o rings etc and bench tested to ensure the spray was correct. That cost approx. $55 for both. Now I know they are good. I still have black smoke when I get up to about 2000 rpm. So, the trial and error continues while waiting for the shop guy to fit me in with his technical expertise and make the smoke disappear.
While the exhaust elbow from the outside looks pretty large, there is a water spray baffle inside which seems to build up a coal like coating eventually blocking the exhaust completely.
first symptom in my last case was increasing soot in exhaust water, then black smoke, then the engine actally will run at lower revs only, then it will start and die. I'm thinking this is an every 5 year job on #505 now that it is down in FL. 15 years when it was in NPT. relates to engine time running. 300 hours maybe?
In earlier case where I thought it was an impellor problem, it actually had carbon blocking the water into the elbow.
... when did you replace the elbow last?
I'm sorry I didn't think to get shots of the sooty water and smoke on video, but I did get the "fixed" results in this video ...
