The more product you apply and then roller, the heavier the texture.. I used a fine tooth-ed spreader. The coarser spreader left more KG and too much of a textured surface for my taste.

Jeff, four+ years latter are you happy with your KiwiGrip decision? Would you have done anything differently. I'm considering it for #115, Smiles.

2 years after the initial coating, I selectively added more product to areas I felt were a little thin (without enough texture). I also painted the top of the companionway hatch with KG and the underside with Benjamin Moore oil based paint. After a couple of years there is abrasion of the KG on the forward portion of the hatch from opening and closing it. That is really the only place the KG has abraided.
As for tips and tricks; since there is a learning curve in application, after practicing on cardboard, I would start on the bow and work aft, since you spend less time on the bow and more in the cockpit. I would also add a bit more texture than I initially thought because the texture dries down and over time gets worn down; but not all that much. When I did the additional KG, I used a textured roller from the hardware store which was 1. more aggressive texturally and 2. lasted a lot longer than the "loopy goopy" roller they provide. There should always be extra rollers on hand.
One area I might not aggressively texture is under the mast where the crew has to skid across on their butts during a tack. And of course, careful masking is key.
If you buy the white KG, your hardware store can tint it with BM tints; I am very happy with Artic White (light grey). I don't remember how many gallons I used, but have them tint each, mix in a five gallon bucket to assure uniformity and return to the gallon cans. Let me know if you have any other questions.
