J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment Engine Cuts off in Reverse

OK...so another question as I try to get my boat fully functional under power.

I dropped in the new (to me) engine from Canada. She runs well and now that I've got the run out measurement dialed in to the specs, the vibration of the propeller shaft is practically gone. The new problem I have is that when I transition the gear shift/throttle knob from forward to reverse, the engine will cut off. I can bring her from forward to the upright "neutral" position and then ease her into reverse but if I try to get any significant power in the reverse position, the throttle cable doesn't move upward as it should for acceleration but downward as it would for deceleration, thereby shutting the engine down.

Any ideas?

two potential issues -
1. The throttle cable should just increase and decrease the fuel flow by adjusting the fuel rack for the high pressure fuel pump assembly. When it is set to low fuel position (e.g. neutral and both minimum throttle in forward and reverse) the idle adjustment at the engine should be against the idle adjust set screw. Set the idle speed using the positive stop screw on the high pressure fuel pump assembly (look in the Yanmar manual for specs but about 850 RPM).
2. If the cable is not getting pulled in the reverse position, it is probably the throttle lever assembly at fault and it should be checked. The throttle lever assembly is set to pull the cable in both forward and reverse. It also could be a corroded cable that is sticking, preventing it being pushed in for idle speed.

So...I find that it helps if you reassemble the parts correctly.....

I hopped on an adjacent J30 of the same year as mine and checked out their throttle/shifting assembly. It turns out that when I installed my throttle cable, I reassembled a lever 90 degrees out of position. I corrected it and now it shifts and accelerates without any glitches!
