I got word that LMPHRF is going to look at the base PHRF rating next month. The base rating on Lake Michigan 144 (J+1 pole and 155% jib). The ODR is 138.

I don't know why they want to mess with an old boat, but I believe it is a political ploy out of Waukegan Yacht Club since I am vice Commodore of a competing Yacht Club. I raced one regatta there lest year and won two races, but placed third overall. Since then I have heard from my PHRF rep and the WYC PHRF rep that I am being looked at and that all J30 on Lake Michigan are being looked at. Every boat I have sailed in the last ten years a WYC rep has appealed to PHRF with no changes.

What is the Data on the lake say? PHRF can't change the rating of a boat like the J30 with all the data out there based on the one boat. I would question that. On Lake Ontario we all carry the class legal 163% and take the 3 second penalty for it. Our rating is 135 with the class legal #1. Given that if you are using the 2 you should get +3 from the base flying sails rating. I would contact your regional PHRF chairperson and ask why the J 30 is getting another look on your lake. They should not change your rating based on your boat. It should be based on the Data for all the boats.

There's plenty of data from down in Chicago...

The Verve Cup this year had a well sailed J/30 (Awesome).

The NOOD a year ago had two J/30s racing PHRF.

I think you'll find a whole host of data to look at.

We will see what happens. I only race the boat on weekday beer cans, and GLSS (Solo Mac) and LMSS races. Next time I do a ragatta I think I will come down to Chicago.

Yes! Please do come down to Chgo, and let's make it a gathering point for the rest of the fleet too, and get a OD section.

We are looking at Verve Cup or NOOD. NOOD is felt to be kind of early for many of us.

I think those people from LMPHRF are pretty sharp and should see a complaint for what it is. We might even be due for an old age allowance pretty soon! I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Nonetheless I'd feel pretty cocky if I were you. (insert winky wink here)
