When iremoved my shaft i used a wheel puller(large one) from sears and it only took a few turns of the wrench to break it free and a few skined knuckels
as for the bearing the hack saw blade in in the bearing and re assembeled upside down works the best a trick i have used is to cut almost all the way thru in 2 places and then use a small chisel that fits between both cuts and then tap the metal up and then thru the bearing the cut will roll up like your opening a sardine can

While on the subject of prop shafts, bearings, etc....

What size stuffing should I use to re-pack my stuffing box?

I still have some packing material left over from the last time I did it. It's at the boat. I'll be able to check it this weekend. I don't remember off the top of my head.

The best thing to do would be to pull the current packing out of your packing nut and then buy something just a little bigger. I don't know if the packing nuts were the same on all J 30s.

I used Shunter's trick to get the shaft out of the shaft coupling. I put a 5/8's long socket in between the shaft coupling and transmission hub. Then using some extra long bolts, sandwiched it all together and popped the shaft out.

I used a hacksaw on the cutless bearing. Then used a chisel to break out the cut slice. The rest of it came out easy.

Congrats on pulling your cutless bearing!

By any chance did you find the packing size? I do intend to save what I pull, but I'm not sure how much it compresses down, and having a second opinion is always a good thing.

I forgot to get it for you. I knew I forgot something. I'm going to go back to the boat on Monday night. I'll make sure I get the size for you then.

Mine was 1/4". I used that green dripless stuff which is great. You "roll your own" with that. You need two rings of regular packing at each end however.

Went to the boat tonight and found the packing. It was 1/4".

I put 3 circles of packing in mine. will that cause more heat from friction?
