I just bought a J/30 up here in Alaska. It looks a previous owner made some modifications to the galley including removing the original stove. I can only imagine that it was gimbaled, for example. The previous owner I bought the boat from had a brand-new Dometic alcohol stove that fits in the covered cavity next to the sink (see photos).

Does anyone have an idea what the original setup was? I see now gimbal brackets in this galley. Anyone know how to proceed? How have you handled this? Maybe there is a gimbal kit that I can use for this alcohol stove?

I just mounted an Origo two burner stove in place of the pressure stove that came stock. I don't use the gimbal feature.

Here's a photo that might match the factory setup for your boat. That is an Origo 4000. Notice the gimbal function takes place in a frame, not directly on the stove.

That is similar to the factory set up, which was a pressure alcohol stove. I removed that stove and dropped in the cookmate version of that Origio 4000 stove. I just had to mount the gimbal weight directly the to bottom of the cookmate and cut the corner of the stove to allow the gimbal lock of the frame to work.

Patrick, without the gimbal frame, I think you will need to custom build something for that stove. Or try to find a gimbal frame from someone parting out another J/30 and then sell that stove and try to get a drop in Cookmate.

Do you have a link to a drop-in cook mate Origo? I can't find information on that anywhere.

Wow, it seems it was discontinued. Cookmate 4200, same as Origo 4100. So frustrating as it is the perfect stovetop for the older J30

I was finally able to find an Origo 4100 on eBay for $400, in good condition and complete with cutting board. There are a few of the electric/alcohol versions out there with what looks like the same form factor.


It looks like I do need to sort out a gimbal frame. If anyone else has photos of the original gimbal frame that would be very helpful. Of course, if there is a way to get ahold of one that would be even better!


I never answered your question. It is a 1981 and does sleep 6. Looks like the same boat as in your link.

Aha! That is really very helpful. Thank you. Now I know that the box installed in my cavity is not stock, and have a simpler gimbal concept than I was coming up with on my own.

I can fab something like this in lieu of finding one that someone parted out.

I went to fit the Origo 4100 I got on eBay and found that it fit right inside the trim without a gimbal. In went the screws to mount it to the trim. Very easy. Probably won't ever need a gimbal anyway.
