J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment Cut back V-Berth bulkhead?

Does anyone know if the starboard bulkhead at the aft end of the v-berth in front of the toilet can be cut back? I'm wondering if it is structural. Doesn't seem so since it's so thin. But this would make getting into the v-berth, changing clothes, etc SO much easier.

The chain plates are attached to that bulkhead and it provides stiffness to the hull shape to prevent deformation. Yes it is structural.

I believe the OP is talking about the bulkhead at the forward end of the head. No chain plates attached to that bulkhead.

That’s right.

Now that I got the idea I’d find it he’d to imagine any cruiser not doing it. Still haven’t cut it out though.

Finally did it. The forepeak is SO much nicer now. Much easier to get into. I just need to sand and varnish the edge. Cut was made with a multitool from aft going foreward so as not to damage the locker.

I am trying to figure out why everyone doesn't do this.

I have removed everything from the v berth on mine. its wide open up there now.

Under the J30 rules you may not remove that bulkhead. In addition, you may not remove the door to the head!!

1.2 It is the intent of the J/30 Class Association and J/Boats, Inc. to maintain the one-design performance characteristics of the J/30 To this end, any substantive change that alters the weight, distribution of weight, shape or performance of the hull, rig or underwater appendages shall be submitted by J/Boats, Inc. to the J/30 Board of Governors for approval prior to implementation.
1.3 Except where variations are specifically permitted, yachts of this Class shall be alike in hull, deck and keel form, construction, weight and weight distribution, shape of rudder, sail plan and equipment. All boats shall be built in accordance with the plans, specifications and these class rules. No alternatives or modifications are permitted unless explicitly stated in these rules or on the official plans or building specifications.

Are we talking about the same bulkhead? In fact what I'm talking about is not even a bulkhead but a faux wall. The piece in question weights about as much as the bosuns chair, cooking utensils, or any other items that could be anywhere on or off the boat. I don't see a match with any piece anywhere in the class rules description.

Plus, we are in Seward, Alaska which is literally the US port farthest from any one design fleet. And this makes a huge difference in the usability of the boat. So I don't think this is the same issue.
