Hey everyone, I am about to have shoulder surgery and I still need to get my barrier coat and bottom paint off my boat to re-do the bottom. I need an easy way to remove all this stuff without putting too much strain on my shoulder. I have a few months to do my rehab before boat season but I want to get this stuff off. I have a boat plainer that can be really effective. It can be set to 1000th of an inch and really skims off paint, but it is a two handed piece of machinery. Has anyone had any luck with solvents or gels or any of that other stuff. Thank for any help

I used Peel Away 7, but it still won't do you any good if you're getting your shoulder worked on. The scraping and sanding were easier than just sanding alone untreated, but I was still whipped! I know of no method without paying someone that will be strain free on your arms to get this done. What about supervised student labor with a trade for some summer sailing?

I have a few friends that can help, but I don't want them to have to do any real sanding, but I could get them to help me scrape. I can one are bandit with a scraper if I have to. Thanks for the info.

When you used the peel away 7 did you use the paper to "peel" the paint. How much came off when you peeled the paper away and how much had to be scraped afterwards. Can it be used when it is cold out? I tried to research it but could not get too much info on line. I have week off in February and in April that I plan to used to get the boat ready for going in the water.
Thanks HHSA Velocity Girl #278

You'll see the results of using Peel Away on Rhapsody at this link: http://j30rhapsody348.blogspot.com/p/rhapsody-bottom-redo.html I used the paper for most of the application, as you want to keep the chemical moist and it is cleaner when scraping. Some limited areas required additional coats of Peel Away, and I didn't consistently use paper for that. Makes a mess when scraping though. "Peeling" the paint is an advertising misnomer. You still need to get the scraper under the paper, but when the stuff works, the paint peels off very well. It still requires elbow grease. Warm temperatures are a must with Peel Away (warmer than 60 degrees, and the warmer the better!). Due to mother nature staying cold last spring, and the launching date drawing near, I rented a tent heater when the temp outside was in the 40s and used it with a tarp cocoon with limited success.

thanks, will this take the barrier coat off too? Will I have to apply twice, once for the bottom paint and once for the barrier coat? I am having trouble opening your link....my computer is a bit slow.
Good news! my shoulder is not surgical right now so I should be able to alot of my own scraping....wait that might not be such a good thing!

Canaan, Good news on the shoulder! There are multiple types of Peel Away. Peel Away 7 will take off the barrier coat. I did research and they have versions of Peel Away that are more caustic (like Easy Off Oven Cleaner), but this only removes the bottom paint, not the barrier coat. Go figure that the less caustic stuff removes all the paint. There is also a version of Peel Away that is sold for Marine applications, but is costs lots more. If you read the MSD sheets, you'll see that it has the same active chemicals as Peel Away 7. The manufacturers website with this info is here: http://www.dumondchemicals.com/ Plan on multiple applications and scraping, pressure washing (which removed more paint after the Peel Away), followed by orbital sanding. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but compared to the time I spend sanding without the Peel Away under the jack stands confirmed this was much easier. I guarantee if you do this in warm temperatures, it will take less applications and the paint will come off much easier. Look about halfway down in this thread and you'll see the post on where I bought the Peel Away 7. http://j30.us/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000622.html On the link to the PDF file in my previous post, right click and save it as a file on your PC, that way you won't hang up your browser if it gets stuck. Thanks a ton! I am looking forward to getting started. I am currently doing some woodwork to get me in the "spirit" and since Velocity Girl is new to me I have a bunch of that keeping me busy right now. Thanks again!
