Need some good used sails for PHRF racing on Lake Erie next year (can wait for end of season).
Light #1 - carbon/kevlar (> 17 knots apparent) #2 - carbon/kevlar General purpose running spinnaker Drifter Kevlar or carbon main
2-3 years old in good condition only.

I'd be surprised if (1) anyone has spent the extra $ on carbon for any J/30 sail (over Kevlar); and (2) built a #2 since the sail became optional--though I must say I've been tempted. Why not just buy new Kevlar headsails and a Dacron Main? Are there really 30' racer cruisers on Lake Erie using full carbon inventories?

Bob - good catch. See edit above.
I inherited a carbon #1 when I purchased boat out of Chicago. You're right the other J30's I have seen at the western end of LE have Kevlar, not carbon, sails. This does include mains.

I would agree with Bob. Get a lighter Dacron main built by a loft that knows how to make good J/30 main sails (North for instance)

Are you suggesting something lighter than the 6.25 oz class legal weight? Is that what PHRF racers have done in your area?

No just the 6.25oz minimum weight but it is pretty light for Dacron. I had North build me a new main this year and it is fantastic. Cannot imagine a Kevlar main would be worth the added cost.

UMMMmmm... you need to talk to a sailmaker, not a "sailsman" from any loft. And the best may not be in Annapolis... Over the yrs I always hear that a North sail is a North sail, blah blah blah... Not in my experience. Het Mark..are you in town? I am in Annapolis and heard Lobo is at Bobbys. Call me, lets talk. Cyn

Oh, and the carbon sails seem to be popular in those lakes... I bought a 155% from some ohio boat... I like but if it had not been such a great deal I'd be sticking with Kevlar... and dacron mains seem to have a longer shelf life...so to speak. They get to be great cruising sails after they dont race too fast...and they seem to have more "tweakabilty" as they age than the kevlar. My 2 cents.

I tend to agree with Red. Look for someone you are comfortable with, will support your program, and work with you. Boats are competitive locally with North, Quantum & UK, and in the past have been so with Ullman/Skelly and Doyle.
