Brian, I'd like to know what hull number it is, so we can take it off the books. Would you mind checking the TSP number on the transom? Also, was it damaged in some way, that required it to be parted out? Thanks, Joe

It is hull number #83. The boat was a victim of the transom exhaust problem these boats are famous for. I strongly suggest all J-30 owners check the aft port quarter for moisture and repair any problems found.

Hull #62 is bone dry in the core by the exhaust. I know because I have a couple of holes to fix on the inside of the hull and transom in the starbord aft locker. Nothing like having an old boat to make one feel free with the drill!
It appears that my boat may have been modified? The exhaust tube through the transom seems to be in an area of solid glass in the transome and this area seems to have been added after the white paint was put in. Anyone have a similar situation?
Also, the transom on hull 62 looks like it may have been tabbed on at the factory? Was the hull built in three parts, port starboard and transom, then connected together. The boat was clearly built in two halves and then put together, but was the transom molded separately and added?
Any idea why the core stops 6" from the transom on the port side of the hull but goes all the way to the transom on the starboard side?

On hull #21, based on the exterior gelcoat, the transom was an add-on (three part hull?). I have always wondered if it was a repair. Glad to know it was from the factory. I haven't looked too closely from the inside yet...Maybe next weekend!

On hull #359, I discovered through an accident the makeup of the transom. While out sailing in heavy air (35 kts with gusts to 50) and putting a reef in the main, we didnt see a log until we were on top of it. The log stopped the boat as it went under the keel. As we surged over the log with the keel, the log rose up and struck the lowest point on the rudder. I heard a distinct crunching noise. One of my crew looked over the stern and saw that the lower gudgeon bracket had bowed outward approx 5/8". We didnt see any other stern damage at the time. Plus, with the reef in, the helm was well balanced and unloaded. So we finished the race and returned to the slip. Thats when I discovered the tear in the stern fiberglass around the upper gudgeon bracket. On hull #359, there is a core about 6" wide running from the top of the stern panel to the bottom apparently to stiffen the panel at the gudgeon supports. The rest of the panel is solid glass. No evidence of coring. There was no coring at the rip in the glass and the panel remained the same thickness from side to side and top to bottom.
This doesnt tell me that the stern panel was made separate from the hull halves but it does tell me that a leak at the exhaust should not damage the core. Its in solid glass.
In any case, insurance and a good shop repaired my stern to my satisfaction, except of course for the increase in premiums.

Alan, I don't understand this part ... On hull #359, there is a core about 6" wide running from the top of the stern panel to the bottom apparently to stiffen the panel at the gudgeon supports. Do you mean there is a _balsa_ core running vertically ... or is there some additional fiberglass? If the entire hull is built in two vertical halves, then this might have just been some tabbing to reinforce the joint.
