Am replacing my engine controls this spring. I see two different Morse/Teleflex part numbers referenced on the forum - MV-2 and CH2100). The CH2100 appears to be a newer design, meant for universal sailboat applications, while the MV-2 is an older design, but more similar to the J30 original equipment.
Will either work? Is there any advantage to either? Recommendations?

I would call ether Torrensen Marine or Mack Boring and see what they recommend. I think there are two options - buying a replacement platic panel and putting the old guages in or replacing the whole panel.

David - I think Rob is referring to the throttle/transmission control, not the engine panel.
I looked 2 years ago for a replacement control because the shaft with the knob that you pull to disengage the transmission from the throttle had sheared off. Instead of replacing the entire control, I was able to fabricate the part from brass stock. Disassembling, cleaning it up and liberal amounts of grease to keep water from infiltrating around the brass shaft have proven successful.

Thanks for the info and links, Mango. This makes 3 options, the two from Morse and yours. The Morse controls are about $160 vs. $250 for your unit.
Sounds like you had no installation issues, however.
Anyone done the MV-2 or CH 2100?

I need to take apart the engine control (speed/tran). does any one have a web link to a pdf of the assambly of the controls. The one i have is a removable shift lever w/ a black knob (broken) in the center for neutral. I still am not sure of the exact model number. it looks as if all of the newer ones have fixxed handles.

Hi Harley, The only thing I have is in the link below. It's a fairly large download (13.5 MB), so you made need to give it a minute. http://www.rambunctiousracing.com/files/2qm15service.pdf The remote control parts are in Chapter 9, beginning on page 126. It's fairly basic, but you may find something helpful in there.

Harley - I don't have a picture, but I was able to repair mine. The shaft that has the transmission disengage knob and goes through the center of the control sheared off. I took it apart and was able to clean it up and spliced the two ends with threaded rod. Keep the shaft well greased to keep out water. There is an old link on the forum describing some of the potential pitfalls of taking the control apart. Check out this thread. https://j30.us/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/4464/engine_control_replacement.htm By the way, I looked all over the web in the past for info on the original control and came up blank. Good luck! Bill
