My policy is up for renewal and I recently applied to MARKEL INSURANCE who has the insurance on some of my other toys. I had a survey don and submitted w/ application. The underwriter informined me that "J/Boats were unacceptable" and therefore unquotable. SO
who is writing paper on J-30's and at what rate?

I use Amica. Boat US will always write a policy. Crazy that they do not write for J/Boats. They must not do to many sail boats.

i had mine with a UK corporation called Dallas... ( i cant remember the rest). in my area there was no other insurance company that insured boats older than 15 yrs. this company only insures old boats. the policy was a little under $1,300.00; but, i'm in the caribbean. maybe the risk here is higher due to hurricanes.

good luck!

Aviva has mine. C$500 or so for Lake Ontario. There is a good agent who handles a lot of the boats around here.

Boat U.S. dropped me for one late payment because I had filed a claim in the previous year, thanks to a ding from team Zephyr (me on leeward) on the starting line at the NA's. I switched to a Naptown based company (410-778-0666), no problems, under 1k a year premium. They did require a survey though.

St Paul Seahorse (800) 277-6698 through Jack Martin in Annapolis. Clueless-attempting to assure coverage on the road to and while at the NA's in LI Sound rep asks questions like "Is that the ocean? Is that salt water? Oh I see you have inland coverage we'll have to adjust for salt water." Me "Um, Chesapeake Bay is salt water too." Martin not the same since Jack went cruising.

Rhapsody's policy is with Amica. http://www.amica.com/default.html

Cost is $702 per year with $468 deductible. I received a dividend check of $129 last month, so that effectively reduced the annual costs to $573. The boat is kept in Newport, RI and by the policy, it is out of the water between 1 Nov - 1 May.

From the policy "WARRANTED THAT NAVIGATION OF THE INSURED YACHT IS RESTRICTED TO: COASTAL AND INLAND WATERS OF THE UNITED STATES BETWEEN EASTPORT, MAINE AND PENSACOLA, FLORIDA"

I'd be curious to learn why Markel Insurance deems J/Boats to be unacceptable.

I'm with Carib Insurers out of Tortola...also 1300. a yr including hurricane coverage. Must have a survey every 2 years... good luck finding a "real" surveyor. Covers Puerto Rico to Venezuela... not to the US...too scary up there, I guess. Martin couldn't even quote me in Annapolis... more than useless.

And, by the way, forget Boat US... they had so many hits down here in Florida last year that they canceled anything they could, and laugh when you call for a boat quote. And, by the way, most claims are having trouble getting paid...imagine. We got Liability insurance on the Lindenburg 28 from "Progressive" ..they do cars mostly.

I just recieved my insurance bill for 2007 from AAA. I have $250.00 deductible, the bill is for $466 (an increase of about $50.00. The boat is sailed on Lake Erie (but that same insurance covered me last year for Key West Race Week)
