J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment Cabin Ceiling Paint

After doing some recoreing of the chainplate areas I am planning on repainting the cabin ceiling? Can anyone recommend a good durable product for the job ? I am not sure if the current paint is one or two part (It appears to be original.) Any tips or tricks would be appreciated. Thanks !

I'm doing that also. But I'm just using the left over Awlgrip from the topsides and painting the interior. I figure if you prep it(acetone/MEK,) anything should stick and look good. I wouldn't try latex.

Interlux Brightsides is a good choice. It is a linear polyurethane, like AwlGrip, but it is a single part. If used on the exterior, it would not have the same quality and durability of a 2 part, but it's perfect for inside. If you use this product, properly thinning it will be critical to avoid brush marks.

To apply, roll it one with a small foam roller and tip it out by softly dragging a dry paint brush through the paint. If you feel the brush drag, add more thinner. If you get runs, wait a few minutes for some of the thinner to dissolve.

As this is an interior application, purchase the flattener and use plenty of it. You will get a far more appealing paint job if it's not glossy.

I'll be painting the inside of the cabin as well in the next month. I will be using some awlgrip I have left over...moondust I think. With the boat tapped off with no ventilation I won't be spraying. I'll be using the same method as Jason King suggests....lots of flattener and using the roll and tip method. I do plan on priming first which is a must if you have made any repair work, if you don't the paint will look different in that area.

I am about to do the same, paintng the interior ceiling. Have you completed yours?

Jason - looks great. As a follow on to David's idea, how about you trailer RattleandHum to the J/30 NAs in September? It would be great for everyone to see the results from your labor of love, give you a chance to race one-design and meet the friends from the forum.

I'm targeting for an early May launch, I'm currently spending about 3 hours a day putting on the finishing touches. I hope that by the end of this weekend the deck will be completely reassembled.

As for the j/30 NAs...well I'm poor now...this rebuild has sucked my wallet dry. I do intend to come down and take a shot at that the nationals but that will have to wait another year. Has a Canadian ever won the event?
