Bill Bill - this is not a MA thing it is an EPA thing. That being said it all comes down to local enforcement. What this also means is that powerboats will NOT get their bottoms cleaned and they will now use MORE gas because there bottoms are so fouled. Way to think this through EPA. David - I found this well hidden document sleuthing around the Interlux site: https://secure.international-coatings.com/pds/yacht/GB_ISO_I_5000392.htm Looks like it can be rolled, brushed or sprayed. For clarification, we're lightly scrubbing bottoms NOT SANDING! This is a huge difference. Removing algea growth from the bottom of the boat in the middle of the ocean is an environmental concern?

I can see some people arguing that ablative paints come off when scrubbed so they should not be scrubbed.
That's mindless because the paints are designed to come off - regardless of whether someone is scrubbing them or not - so they'll end up in the water anyway.
Removing growth from a hard bottom finish, like Baltoplate, should not have an environmental impact. What a stupid law.
How many boat bottoms have to be scrubbed to equal the impact of a single cargo ship legally discharging ballast?

Don't get me wrong, I am completely in favor of the goals of the EPA to preserve our environments. What I would like to know now is the relative damage to the environment across each type of bottom paint. If one is more environmentally friendly I would purchase even at a higher price.
