How many J-30s have spartite in the partners vs chocks. I read in sailing world recently discussing the etchells class and how the chocks should be moved for each condition. Is this how the winning boats do it?

Nobody that I know of moves their partners in different conditions. It would be impossible to do it during a race.

There is a J-29 that races nearby and a crew member told me that they change the wedges and shroud tension before each race.

The J29 is balanced better than the J30. TO improve the balance of the J30 you always want the sailplan as far aft as you can get it. That puts the mast max aft at the deck.

thanks for the info. My hull 27 has a very large partners, larger than the later hull nos. The rig tuning recommendations call for moving the mast all the way back and set the fore stay to a fixed length. Mine is 2 inches to short and I will have to add a extension to the bottom of my forestay. perhaps this will give me some weather helm because I dont have any now till about 12 knots of apparent wind.

Measure carefully unless you have no interest in OD. I expect Nick put the mast in the max aft position by OD rules. Also be clear about your forestay measurement. Otherwise, moving it all more aft will give you more helm, but can be hard on the spreader brackets (messes up the geometry).

Ah, I sailed on hull #007 once that had very large partners.

The reason for using max headstay length is to have more mast rake, which gives more weather helm. If you still need more in under 10 kts, I believe moving the mast butt to the max forward position would help.

Another way to induce weather helm is to heel the boat a bit. Putting some crew weight to leeward would help.

Some people are very good at driving with no feel at all in the tiller. I'm not that good, and prefer a bit of weather helm.

Hi folks

I have read a little bit about tuning and mast partners and so on...

I dont even know if I am usingthe correct terminologie ...Lol

Ok the black foot which is bolted in the cabin floor and the mast is sytanding on is adjustable. Mine is all the way up front ( bow ) and I do NOT have anything between the mast and the deck on top ....

I think it worked alright this year, but I do have a little too much weatherhelm to my liking....

Also my mast is pretty bend backwards, without any pressure on the backstays...

The other question I have, where to get a fitting rain boot for the mast. mine is old plastic and pretty hard and has a big rip in it.

I do not want to buy expensive spartite system, I have learned over the year tht a little rain doesnt matter ...

Thanks for all the help
Thorsten

That 'black foot' is the mast step. Most boats have it all the way forward. Check the rules for limits. In 8-12 knots, on a beat to weather, with 1200-1400 of crew to keep the boat flat, there should be minimal weather helm. Try measuring your forestay. Rule max of 35'10 ½" was once a standard setting. Nowadays, some find this is too loose and tighten the headstay turnbuckle at the bow 10-30 full turns, less for light air, more for heavy. Boom centerline or down if you cannot keep the boat flat. Slight helm helps you point; too much means you are dragging your rudder. Blown-out, draft-aft sails don't help either.

Most marine stores sell self-amalgamating tape, which sticks to itself. We cover it with sticky-back sail repair to extend the useful life. Beware of duct-tape; it won't survive the UV, is sticky to remove, and frankly looks like_ well you know!

Hi Thanks

yeah ... probably most important thing is that I sail with my wife ( 130 lbs ) and me ( 170 lbs) lol.... on SOME races I have help from another gentleman...
I think with a lot of railmeat the watherhelm could be reduced.. but I dont have a rockstar crew .. :-)

Sails are good

have to look for that tape... I was wondering if I could find one of those original sleeves they would be sufficient..

Yeah I needed to go that duct tape rout last year and its awfull lol
