I am considering adding a roller furling unit. The CDI uses a #6 luff . Does anyone know what size luff tape is on our class sails?

So, having just carried a new tuff luff to the islands... this makes me wonder... I saw in the classified someone found they needed a 1206 extrusion, not a 1205.... I had a 1205, replaced it with a 1205, then tried to use some "new" sails.....they would not go up the forestay....not a good thing during racing season. To confuse matters, my old cruising #3 would also not come down. Whats up??? Most of my old sails ame with the boat, I never had a drama with my racing sails from North, then got some sails from Cheasapeke, and a new tuff luff.... didn't work. Perhaps I should figure this out before I put up the tuffluff and/or buy sails from any other class members

Sails for J/30s can have either a #5 or a #6 luff as both types of Tuffluffs are used on various installations. So the #5 luff tapes can fit either unit, but have been known to pull out of a #6 extrusion. The #6 luff tapes are usually too tight to go up a #5 extrusion.

We replaced out headfoil this fall. (After 25 years of hard service, our original detonated in 25-30) We went through the whole drill. The tuffluff system permits either a 1205 or 1206 over the headstay. Not surprisingly, the 1205 accepts #5 tape and the 1206 #6 tape.
The headfoil-2 system uses the #6 sized foil only for the J/30 headstay. In theory, #5 tape will work on both the #5 and #6 foils. In pratice, you may find #5 tape pulling free of a #6 foil. You won't get #6 tape up a #5 sized tuffluff.

I am going with the profurl R-35 ( the racing version) I am hoping that if I place the drum close to the deck I wont have to alter all of my sails. Any advice? thanks, clint

You will likely need to modify your sails. Even if you keep furling unit low it will raise your attachment point off the deck (and the horns) 6 to 9" or more. In addition you need to allow room for swivel at top which effectively lowers your hoist height. #3s usually are short on hoist and might be usable. #1's and #2's are generally not. You might think about modifying only your #2 (since it may become an optional sail for one design purposes) and keeping your #1 and #3 for racing. They might work if you can remove drum and not use furler if racing. FYI, I had a new 145 made for the furler and as my primary cruising sail.

I am replacing the head foil on my boat, and am wodering what the difference is between the Tuff Luff & Head Foil 2 systems. Head Foil 2 seems to be what the boat came with, and I can probably replace just the extrusion if I go with that system, vs. total replacement if I go to Tuff Luff.

I had the same choice this past fall. Just replacing the extrusion was cheaper, and pretty straightforward.
