I just bought a J-30, hull # 195. Does anyone know any of the history of this boat? Also does anyone have any info on how to run the lines on the boat. Mine have all been removed.

I have also recently purchased a J/30, hull #523. Can anyone give advice on replacing the wire and rope halyards with all rope. How has it worked? What materials did you use?

I'm assuming, Mr Tremmel, that you are interested primarily in the lines in the mast. The main halyard has two sheaves it has to pass over at the top of the mast. It exits through the forward exit plate on the starboard side of the mast and is lead aft. The spinnaker halyard is lead through the sheave just above the forestay attachment and out through the aft exit plate on the starboard side. The jib halyards feed through the two sheaves (more inside?) and out through the exit plates on the port side. Keep the jib halyards sorted so the port halyard stays to the left of the starboard halyard. It makes it easier for the pit crew. The remaining line in the mast is the pole topping lift. That goes into the mast well below the forestay and exits on the starboard side. At the base of the mast are sheaves to lead the lines aft. These varied over the years. Mine have swivel pins to allow them to rotate except for the topping lift. It uses a cheek block. The rest should be evident.
To R. Shear - many have replaced the wire halyards with all rope. I used the new Sta Set X+. It allowed me downsize the diameter to 5/16 from 3/8. You want a line that can take around 3800-4000 lb working load. Before you run the new rope halyards, make sure you inspect the sheaves for any burrs left by wire meathooks. You dont want to shread your new lines. There are lots of other options for replacing your wire halyards. Layline.com is a great source for ideas.
