Has anyone actually measured, or does anyone know how much a J/30 weighs? I know that the J/Boats site says 7,000 lbs. One spec. sheet says 6,000 factory and 6,500 sailing. And, the class rules note 6,000 factory, and 6,700 sailing.... Whatever factory and sailing means. Maybe there are some thoughts about that too. Reason for the question is I want to know how much weight I'm actually putting onto a trailer. I'm not going far, so the mast and cushions and other gear are off the boat. Thanks.

I measured jezabelle spring of 2002 just after purchasing her . (hull # 27) The boat had been out of the water for 7 months. I subtracted the trailer wt and came up with 7400#. At that time it only had 2 mains, 2 163%, 2 spinnakers and a storm jib. Half tank of fuel. Empty holding and water tanks. Mast, boom and spinaker pole were on board.

I found out that Lake Ontario PHRF has not measured the weight of the boat, but uses 7,200 lbs. as a standard weight. Take a couple of your sails off and that seems to be about right. Unfortunately it seems like the J/30 may be like a lot of other boats that weigh more than the designers hoped for when they came out with the specifications. I was hoping someone would say 6,500 lbs. How did you weigh the boat? was it from the crane's load cell when hanging? Thanks.

Aeolus #065 has an empty weight of 6,260 lbs. It includes class sails, empty fuel, water, head tanks, standard equpment and nothing extra on board. The weight was done on a CAT Scale. I have a Triade trailer and dually tow vehicle which were weighed by the same CAT Scale before loading. Jerry Atwell

Foghorn, #62, was weighed rigged for racing before I did my renovation. 6,731 lbs. I think she weighs about 6,900 now.

I have weighed my trailer and dually pickup several times at "certified" scales. CAT scales at truckstops are pretty accurate. I would say that they are plus or minus at least 100-200 pounds

So it seems there is a 1000 pound difference between hulls #27 and #85. (I think I'm hull #222.)
It seems there were some boats that may have additional weight in optional teak flooring, and an optional table but that couldn't be more than 100 pounds. Then add in some safety equipment, maybe propane systems, or a heater for another couple of hundred pounds of possible difference between boats... But there is still 500 pounds or more that must be a weight difference between finished hull assemblies from boat to boat.
Maybe that's not so odd. Apparently J/105's, which are about the same weight as J/30's vary in weight by 300-400 pounds, and some of the newer scrimp built boats are rumored to be 600-800 pounds heavier than the older boats.

I always worry about waterlogged balsa making the boat weigh more but the moisture meter said no at the time of survey.

Having fixed a fair amount a wet blasa core, I'd be surprised if core saturation has much to do with it. IT's only 3/4" thick and even badly soaked core still floats, mine did anyway. Water weighs something like 60# a cubic foot. To get 1000 punds you'd have to get about 18 cubic feet of water into the core?? I think this would be very obvious! Clint I think there's some water in the deck of your boat. Check carefully around the rope clutches I recall a few soft spots, but a couple punds of water maybe, not 1000!
