Greetings from Southern Md-my red paddlewheel in my Nexus log transducer broke an arm and I have had no luck finding a replacement other than having to purchase the whole transducer piece from an elusive overseas source. Anyone have any ideas?

You can not replace the paddle wheel, you need a whole transducer. You can get them at Pyacht.com or visit ComNav.com to find a different dealer.

I would consider upgrading from Nexus to NX2. You would need to replace depth and speed transducers, the server and add/replace on NX2 multi display. You will get more functionality, more NEMA ports and a USB port and can use the FX2 software on your computer for beetter calibration and to compute polars and analyse your race data.

The NX2 systems use the same transducers as virtually all other instruments sets out there instead of the proprietary ones used in Nexus. The Nexus transducers are more expensive and less reliable.

Thanks for the info-I found a Nexus expert down in Florida (recommended by Henry at Layline) and he sent me a new Transducer which I put in yesterday with success. All systems(Wind, Depth, and Speed/Temp) are now working save for the GPS Nav portion which has a disconnected Magellan receiver of some type and questionable wiring coming out of the server..I'm thinking of just investing in a new color handheld (Garmin GPSMAP76CX) that I can keep in the cockpit...

Scott - I bought a GPSMAP76Cs and sold it on eBay a week later for $20 more than I paid for it :-) However - I sold it because the display was just too darn small. I got the GPSMAP 276c (West Marine version) and really like it. I use it both on the boat and in my car until I bought one that had an internal GPS. I also brought the 276c with me to Europe and used it with a rental car (bought the CD for the Maps of course).

I've got the bracket that holds the 276c mounted on a wooden arm that swings out into companionway so you can see the GPS display from the helm. It is also wired so the unit charges when the instruments are on. It has NMEA-0183 in/out that I also tie it to my wind instrument so I get true or relative wind. I can easily snap the 276c out of the mounting bracket on the boat to take it off and use it elsewhere. Look on eBay and see what kind of deal you can get for something a little larger display than the GPSMAP76cx - you'll be wishing you had a bigger display as soon as you get it.

I would not spend the money on a color handheld, they are not worth it. Once the sun hits it you cannot see anything. However a handheld GPS and VHF that runs on standard batteries should be a basic saftey item on every boat that is sailed anywhere other than completley protected waters. So the answer is get both (-:

Thanks for the great info guys...I will look into seeing if the 276 is on ebay...I may also grab a GPSMap76(black and white) instead of the Cx as a backup...they are a pretty good deal right now...how about a recommendation for handheld VHF radios?
