Anyone know tyhe bottom surface area minus the keel and rudder? I'm getting to about 175 sqft.

How much VC17 do you use? My experiance has only been in A LOT of wind with high temps. My experiance: Vast amounts!

P.S. The Stainless rail pics are on the way. They are on, but the weather has been crap since so no pics yet. (40F with rain and sleet.)

P.S.2 The "For Sale" page update is on the way as well. Although it is proving more difficult than the hand rail pics!

Mark,

Don't know the square feet, but I used 1 1/2 cans last year. Another 30 owner uses only one, so go figure. Great news on the pics.

Thanks,
Jay

I was able to do whole bottom, keel and rudder with 1/2 gal of Baltoplate, rolled. I've been told VC Offshore and Balto are very similar.

I assume both replies were for one coat? Baltoplate says 300 sqft/gal, suggesting 150 sqft total including keel and rudder? VC17 says 315 sgft/gal. 1 1/2 cans is about 1/3 gal, suggesting perhaps 100 sqft????

Related question: Is one quart working? The packaging says three coats. I've always done 2.

I use 2 cans VC 17 and do bare spots first than 1 coat over all.

I got 1/2 gal/coat for balto. I applied 4 coats over interprotect, then wet sanded. I think you would lose alot of coverage if you wet sanded after only one coat, unless their was very little roller "orange peel" affect. I used 1/8 nap foam roller, not 1/4. I estimate the hull area as .75*LWL*beam, or about 220 sqft. Another 25 sq ft or so for keel, 12 for rudder. Don't know why mine went so far - I drew it out pretty thin to reduce the wet sanding.

SHunter is efficient with paint, I hope not so efficient on the race course (I square off against him this spring for the first time). I seem to always use ~3/4 of a can for two coats, and still sand through occasionally when I wet sand to fully eliminate "orange peel".

The can says you only need to apply more than one coat initially, then follow-up annually with 1 coat...that is what I (as well as other 30's in this area)do...fresh water Lake though, salt water may be different....
