J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment outboard power

I am very sensitive to diesel or gas fumes and get quite ill if there are any in the cabin. Therefore I have considered using an outboard to drive a boat like a J 30 to separate the fumes from the cabin.

Any thoughts? Does anyone have an outboard driven J 30?
Does anyone with similar sensitivities find way to ventilate and keep the cabin healthy?

I have often thought about it. I'd love to have the space under the cockpit to make a big bed. However, my engine jsut shown far too much life to even consider it yet. J29s do it and they are quite similar to a J30 just about 1000# lighter. I think they use 7.5 HP outboards. I might use a 9.9.

However, redoing all of you fuel lines very carefully and cleaining the engine compartment might do well enough for you. I did that during a recent refit and my boat does not smell of diesel and she used to.

You might consider repowering the boat with an electric motor. I recall reading about it in Practical Sailor. With this system you can power at about 6kts for 8 hours before needing a recharge. Check out this web site and read the news articles.
