Hello everyone-got a question regarding prop rattle. I just had my dripless seal changed out and shaft aligned ($2100-ouch)on Blitz(#122). The cutlass bearing had neen changed in 04. Prior to the changeout I had noticed a prop rattle/vibration at various RPM, but thought it to be fairly normal for age/lifecycle etc.. Now I am noticing it more; everything is working perfectly-good shifting/engaging, and lots of thrust in both forward and reverse just a really annoying high pitched rattle that definitely comes from the prop area. I dive the boat regularly and it is spotless below. Do I need to worry or take action or can I just live with it and press?

When was the last time you had the prop re-conditioned?

Not sure, but it produces good thrust and doesn't feel too loose but that is an uneducated assumption...

Probably need to have the prop re-conditioned. If it's still a Martec, they do that for a reasonable fee.

Make sure it isn't the transmission slipping. I had that happen on Rhapsody. We thought it was the Martec prop, rebuilt it and same thing occured. Turned out the clutch was worn resulting in "chatter" on the shaft. We thought it was the prop sticking and not opening fully. A transmission rebuild where they changed the seating surface on the conical clutch face fixed the problem.

That is true about the tranny. The way to check the prop is the blades should be no closer than 3/8ths of an inch together at the tip when closed and there should be no sideways movement of the blades.

Did you check the cutlass bearing and/or shaft wear at the cutlass bearing?

Thanks everyone-yes, the cutlass bearing is brand new/noslop at all. I will check the prop-it looks like the Tranny/clutch is working fine...just rattling away down here in Pax River/Solomons..!

I would bet your problem is the clutch slipping. Acutally it is the 'drive cone' that wears and needs replacing. Check out the following forum discussion... https://j30.us/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/5230/Prop_Vibration_Slipping_Clutch.html#Post5230
