OK - we're getting close to wrapping up our purchase of an '82 J/30. Just waiting on the survey report and expect it to be good.
So, a couple questions:
1.) Short-term: the sails on this boat are bags. Given lead times for new racing sails, I'm looking for anyone interested in selling decent used racing sails to get through this season. If anyone has any older sails (but decent) they are interested in selling, feel free to email me.
2.) Long-term: what's the prevailing opinion on sail makers for the fleet. I know North builds a popular product for the J/30 and I have quotes for 3DLs and the Code 2S Norlite kite. However, before placing an order, it would be interesting to know what folks in the community have to say about some of the other products. UK? Quantum? (I'm sure this should spark a good conversation... ;-) I'll probably be purchasing for next season which will give me time to get the rest of the boat in race shape.
Any info, guidance, etc. would be much appreciated.
Thanks, - JBro

My personal opinion is that between North, Doyle, Quantum and UK the products are all very good. There are some advantages to the sails with no seams such as the 3DL but I think all the big players have these. The difference comes down to the loft you deal with. If you have a sailmaker that will spend time with you on your boat fitting the sails, tuning the boat to the sails and then sailing with you to help set lead postion, sheet tension etc, this will make the biggest difference. Find the loft you want to work with and buy their sails.
