Guys, I need some help from you!

Sultan lost its 2 blade folding prop when it tangled with a fishing trap on an overnight sail in the Caribbean. What should I do? I was thinking of installing a 2 blade fixed prop; but, I want to know your experience. Will it work? What do you think is better?

There is no reason that if you work with reputable prop company you could get a proper prop. But why? They are death to sailing speed and would not be good if you want to get top dollar if/when you sell the boat. Just replace it with the Martec. My 2cts.

I know that fixed props slow the boat down; but, is it really that much? We are talking about a 2 blade fixed. What about reliability? Are the folding props as reliable as those fixed?

Well I guess technically since there are fewer moving parts one could argue that they would be less reliable. However if the prop is properly maintained, inspected and rebuilt when needed. There is no reason it would be less reliable.

I have not heard of any failures when properly maintained.

The folding prop is less effecient under power than a proper non-folding, that is a true, but this is a sailboat we are talking about not a powerboat (-:

Thanks David! I already requested a quote from Martec. They have a great site and even better customer service.

While we're at it, what is the best way to maintain the Martec prop?

I use H&H Propeller http://www.hhprop.com/ to rebuild the prop. Just keeping it clean and free moving is key. Martec stated that the blades should be no closer than 3/8ths of an inch and sould have no side to side play. If they do then the prop needs to be rebuilt. I had H&H do this for about $250 and the prop is so much better now.
