I recently hauled my J 30, and found quite a few blisters. The yard recommends sandblasting the entire bottom, repairing blisters, barrier coat to required mils and and painting with with baltoplate. I want to start racing it. Any comments?

I too have some blisters and a new bottom seems to be in the cards. I bought the boat in Florida last Fall (1985 Hull #523). It was in great shape other than the bottom, having spent a lot of time in warm southern water. I am looking for a yard in LIS that can take care of the blisters this coming Winter, any suggestions?

David - barrier coat and baltoplate are a good start to a plan to have a fast bottom. Add to that fairing the bottom and keel, and if possible templating the keel. Might as well go all out. Having a faster boat makes up for mistakes on the race course.

One note: my understanding is that Baltoplate and VC Offshore are nearly identical products (they may be identical now that Interlux owns both). I have VC Offshore on mine and it has been very fast. But you have to be diligent about cleaning the bottom (weekly) or it grows stuff pretty fast especially after a year or so.

Try the TP factory in RI. Anticipation had that done many years ago.

I did it myself 2 yrs ago -not too bad

first I had the bottom sandblasted
then fill in all the blisters with a west system mixture that is thick enough so it doesn't sag. -you'll do this about 3-4 times sanding between coats. (I used a window squeegy to put on the west sysytem)

the bottom came out great and i put a few coats of the interlux 2001 barrier coat on
