J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment Spin Sheets through Second Block to lead to spin winch

I noticed several J30s are set up to run the spin sheets from the rear turning block to another one at the gate stanchion base up to the spin winch ... looks like a great idea for a golden age crew as it looks like it makes the cockpit easier to get around ... but the question is has anyone had problems with the strength of the stanchion base? or any other problems with the lead at that angle?

Vic - no problems with the stanchion base, assuming you have backing plates/washers on the through deck bolts. This last season I upgraded the blocks at the stanchion base to Ronstan Series 55 automatic ratchet blocks. This helps the person flying the spinnaker so the cabin top winch is not needed in light to moderate air. It is easy to switch the block from between ratchet, no ratchet, or load sense ratchet (runs free unless it senses a load).

As you note - it keeps the spinnaker leads out of the aft cockpit area.

roger, roger tried it yesterday works fine. but not with those expensive blocks.

We run our sheets this way on my boat and I have yet to see any problems.

Laser Beam has the same setup and I have no complaints...of course I spend my time on the pointy end so take this with a grain of salt.
