J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment Main sheet fine tune...again....

Ok, so after the 20+ knots in St Croix this weekend, I am finally going to have to take pity on my main trimmers. Doesn't help that the last set of "original blocks" are on their way out I just looked at all the pics of you all changing out and using some original equipment.... Since I have to start fresh, here is what I am thinking; I see the different loads between fine and heavy lines on that triple as being a problem in my world.(Bob Rutsch's comments?) I am thinking that the top triple can be salvaged and use a new triple w/cam and becket (#2141)... and using a smaller set (40s) in the middle, a fiddle with cam/becket and another double in the middle.... different blocks for different lines. There is a pic on pg 1201 WM 2008 catalog which shows almost that but the fiddle would attach to the becket on the bottom triple... not to the plate where its camcleat is. My question is whether that puts the fine tune line more in line with the heavy tune line, and would it just get caught up in that? I like the idea of using a smaller shorter line and blocks in the fine tune...but will the 40s handle the loads?
I have distorted 2 sets of the "standard" main blocks, at the cam cleat and then the pin between the bottom block and the existing double snaps.... This last set is ready to go.
Let me know what you know before I spend $$$ on something that won't work. I have been comparing size, breaking strength...seems the older blocks won't carry as much load even though they are bigger. Red

I bought a complete system from Henry at Layline-he set the whole thing up delivered ready for use. Works perfectly-I've had it for a bunch of years with no issues. I would think that it probably doesn't make sense to salvage the top triple if it is getting old...

Hey Red - Here is the link to a good thread on this. Also it has some photos of my setup which I think is pretty standard and uses most of what you have now.

It was the BEST change I have made on the boat. The control you have to shape the main is spectacular.
