I am having trouble trimming a new #2 sail: can't seem to close the leech in any fairlead position although it looks like it *might* work if the fairlead track was about 24" longer toward the bow.

While I'm working with the sailmaker to make sure that he has built it properly, I'm asking if the length and location of the main/outer fairlead tracks are fixed by Class Rule or at the discretion of the owner?

I quickly scanned the Class rules but see no reference to these fairleads, perhaps I am missing something?

I have the same issue. I have ordered another #2 that I use for cruising and racing if the wind is perfect for it (not often). We had to cut the clew higher so the sheeting angles would work. The sail has not been delivered yet so we will see if it worked.

I have seen J/30s with a second track for #2 - event tracks where the toe rail is. So you could use these for PHRF but I am pretty sure they are excluded from use during class regattas.

Cannot relocate the track used for the #1 & #2, but can relocate the forward jib sheet tracks (5.4.1.6). At least one boat in our fleet has used 5.4.1.1 "Four pairs of deck padeyes to assist trimming of headsails..." for padeyes and blocks forward of the track to use with a deck sweeping #2. Otherwise the clew of the #2 has to be cut high to get the lead correct with the fairlead pushed max forward.

Many thanks - will double check measurements with the sailmaker before adding any padeyes....

Yup. My #2 has a high clew as well and works great. It is purely a cruising sail that I put on the furler, but in 8+ kts it seems to move the boat along very smartly.

roger, roger ... my #2 on roller furling as well ... works well to 25 with full crew weight on high side. Sail maker is supposed to measure all this stuff out and then run it through computer to figure out the "best" cut ... but if they don't know how wacky J30 guys sail ... duh.

So ok the boat was still overpowered ... but no rooster tails off the stantion bases.
The lead would have been at the forward end of the main track.

So I played around this weekend with my old class #2 and I found that it fit the far end of the tracks, but then I took a 3 inch strop and added it to the tack and hoisted a bit higher and it worked much better. (The #2 hoist is 6in shorter than the #1 by class rules)

I sent you an e-mail with a picture of my #2 trimmed on a beat. We use the standard genoa track with the block all the way forward. The sail was made by the Doyle loft in Mt. Clemens, Mi. I'm sure they have the demensions of the sail. For reaching we have a custom barber hauler we made. The barber hauler line has a snatch block for attachment to the sheet; that line runs thru a block with a cam cleat (similar to the bottom end of your main sheet fiddler block) that has a snap shackle that we attach to the base of a life line stantion. The barber hauler is addjustable for any point of sail.
