How can the base rating for a J/30 range from 137 to 144?
I submitted for 155% head sail and roller furling credit giving me a base rating of 144, Spinnaker 147 and non-spinnaker 164. Just curious.

Koos - you have a gift rating! For PHRF-NB the base rating for a boat assumes 155% headsail and spinnaker pole same length as J dimension. For a J/30 that equates to 144, although my OD certificate shows a base of 138 with no adjustments. The 138 base is consistent with a 144 base and adjustments of -3 sec/mile for oversize OD jib and -3 sec/mile for oversize spinnaker pole (J + 1 foot). The doublehanded certificate that I have assumes only the #3 genoa is used and the base is listed as 144 which is adjusted to 150 spinnaker, 173 non-spinnaker.

PHRF-NB applies adjustments per this document:
Cruising Headsail +6
Roller Furling +3
OD 163% Genoa (155 base) -3
OD Spin Pole longer than J dimension by 1 foot -3

For One Design, the base ratings are 138 non spinnaker and 155 spinnaker. Assuming since you have roller furling and cruising headsail, your rating is 138 + 9 = 147 spinnaker and 155 + 9 = 164 non-spinnaker

If you reported any changes to the OD configuration, the rating may also be adjusted. I never figured out why the base is listed as different on the certificate for OD versus a non-OD configuration, but the adjustments seem to be consistent when applied as a difference to the OD rating. You may want to send Pat Beausoleil (PHRF-NB Administrator) an email and see if she can send an explanation.

Thanks for the information Bill. Is the double handed certificate based on the use of #3 only or number of crew and #3?

The rating is based on the sail only. Since the 163% genoa is usually too overpowered without crew weight, it makes sense to get the credit and use the smaller sail. If it is real light air, the smaller sail obviously hurts more than helps. That's what PHRF is all about - optimize the rating! You can't switch back and forth between ratings in a series. I use the OD rating whenever I race with crew, and the 110% headsail rating just for doublehanded races.
