replacing an old tuff-luff with a Harken Carbo foil tomorrow. The original headstay is also being replaced due to stress crack on swedged fitting.

Is this the once every 25 year replace program?
Or has that foil been done before?

Vic - I think the tuff-luff was replaced in 1995 before I owned the boat. So, since Rhapsody is 1981 vintage, that makes the head foil a once every 14-15 year replacement cycle....

I replaced the old HeadFoil 2 foil about three years ago with the TuffLuff Aero. I've used the Harken Carbo Foil on other boats and don't have a preference between the two.

The HeadFoil 2 was ancient - these things have a pretty good life span and both the cost and the ease of installation are pretty minimal.

If you do any racing at all, go with a foil. If all you'll ever do is cruise, then I can see a furler being attractive, though it's not for me. I don't see any good reason to go with hanks.

How much was the Harken Carbo, and are you doing the install yourself ?

The new headstay with the Harken Carbo foil was $761.40 plus tax. I bought it last fall from Hall Spars and told them I didn't need it until April. It came all preassembled. I just needed to install the two ends.

I have a Harken foil and take the furler off for racing and on for cruising.

Harken roller on #505 dates from installation on #327 in 1983... then moved over to 505 in 84... still going strong ...
But I am at 25 year replacement time ...
These maintenance schedules are a hassle.
