J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum The Boat, Sails and Equipment J29 & J30 share a rudder?

One of the 30s I found needs a new rudder. I found a 29 rudder that's acceptable, but don't know if they are the same.

Thoughts!

From the J/29 website rudder specs listed at the bottom of the page are "Temporarily suspended pending validation of Plan A". That's been like that for a couple of years.

Comparing that table with the J/30 rudder profile in the J/30 Class rules indicates they are the same. I didn't see the J/29 rudder drawing so can't tell if the overall height and mounting locations are the same.

From a minimum weight spec, the J/29 is 25kg (55 lbs) while the J/30 minimum is 60 lbs.

So - it looks close, but I would measure to validate.

Bill, if I understand the class rules correctly J/30 owners are not permitted to build their own rudders? Just curious....

Koos - that is a correct statement. Para 5.6.1 identifies the rudder sources that have been approved by the class based on review of prototypes submitted for inspection by the board of governors. This is in addition to the stock rudders built by TPI, who no longer manufactures J/30 parts.
