Is a main for a J30 the same as a main for a J29? I got one with my boat when I purchased it last year and it looks to be in better shape than the one I am currently using.

If it's a frac J/29, the mainsail dimensions should be the same.

A racing sail might be cut differently for a 29. It's a lighter boat and probably doesn't need as much power, so it could be designed to be flatter than a J/30s.

I sold an old Rhapsody main to a J/29 Frac owner for use as a delivery sail. The class specs on the J/30 in section 5.12.2 of J/30 Class Rules are more tightly controlled than the J/29 class specs para 11.5.

The previous owner had a J30 and a J29 and I'm sure the J29 was a mast head.

J/29 Frac will have the same foot but the hoist will be almost 4 inches too long. If the sail has been re-cut previously, some of the hoist may have been eliminated so it will fit like a glove then. I have an old j/29 sail that I use.

A J/29MH won't fit at all (too short and the foot is much longer).

I wouldn't worry that it is underpowered. Most J/29 fracs have big roachy mains with a lot of power.

If you have one already, why don't you hoist it up and see if it fits? If not but it is in good shape it would be worth it to get it cut to fit.
