Instead of a stopper ball or eye splice, I just use an anchor hitch to tie the shackle to the halyard. Here is a link for an example;
Anchor Hitch Knot Example It does not come loose, is light weight and easy to tie.
After a season I cut the shackle off to shorten the halyard a few inches which repositions new halyard cover at the clutch.
