J/30 Class Association Forums J/30 Forum Events and Scheduling 2009 North Americans??? Where

So I think it would be great to know where next years NA are going to be, BEFORE this years NA's.

The four normal reagions that hold the race are:

New England/Connecticut
Annapolis
New Orleans
Chicago Area

The Boston Yacht Club here in Marblehead will be thrilled to have them next year. However it has been a while since the NA's were Chicago and New Orleans so those may be other areas that want to host next year other than New England.


What are peoples thoughts on where the NA's should be held next year?

New Orleans would like the 2010 NAs. All approve say I all that decline, please visit me in the French Quarter to night :>)

J/30s from Metro NYC to Cape Code can relatively easily sail to an NA regatta on Long Island Sound (LIS) or in Southern New England (SNE). So since 1997 when Newport got back into the mix, the NA's have been held on either Long Island Sound or Narragansett Bay every other year. The usual four-year cycle has been SNE-Chicago/New Orleans-LIS-Annapolis with the western regatta occasionally being dropped/wiped out.

Three to four years is about right for most clubs. It keeps regional interest up and organizers/clubs remember the good times and have forgotten the planning and hard work involved. 2009 is due to go west, but I can understand if NO is not ready. Maybe Chicago or LIS moves up? Cedar Point YC always hosts a great regatta, but I would not be averse another western LIS club in the mix. Likewise the Chesapeake Bay might be wise to Hampton a shot. Will those from western LIS sail to Marblehead? Would it attract boats from further up the coast?

This is my concern also. I think we will have 5 from my district this year in Bristol and I think we could get 7 for a NA here just from NNE but that is not enough for a NA, we would need some boats to travel.

Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport CT is willing to host the 2009 J30 North American Championship. The CPYC board has approved the Regatta and will place it on the Club's Regatta Schedule for '09 at the wishes of the J30 Class Association. Cedar Point has a busy regatta schedule for '09. Hosting a number of YRA-LIS Junior Regatta, the Thistle North Americans and the Atlantic National in August, and the Star North Americans in Sept. The tentative dates for the NAs at CPYC would be Ocr 1-4, '09. This is a little later than CPYC has scheduled the NAs in resent years, but the busy regatta schedule at the club necceeitates the later date. Sailing Conditions will be great.

Class members please discuss this on the "Forum" and with your District Governors. The class needs to make a tentative decision at the Governors meeting at the upcoming North Americans in Bristol RI.

I'd bring Rhapsody to Marblehead or Cedar Point for 2009.

John - Oct is late in the season for our area, and preference would be to have it earlier but it wouldn't be a show stopper. Would it be possible to piggyback the J/30 NAs with one of the other events scheduled or would there be a club "capacity" problem?

Maybe we can get some feedback from people who come to the 2008 NAs and decide on Sunday 21 September where 2009 will be. Hopefully more people on the forum here will post their opinions.

Fuzzy Wuzzy and crew would make it to Cedar Point but most likely not to Marblehead. The October dates are late but still OK.
John - why not run the NA's together with your One Design regatta in June?

Marblehead or cedar point works for heatn'er up in 09. Anyone consider Nantucket Sound???? Hyannis Yacht Club has great facilaties and Race season is over by second week in Sept. Tom Duggan is a big gun at HYC. The week before NA's is what we call the fall FIGAWI AKA The hurricane cup / Eye of the storm race from Hyannis to Nantucket, Camp for the night and race back to Hyannis the next day. big event, LOADS O FUN. NA's could be week after if anyone wanted to join in the Island Fun. HYC has large mooring field and could probably handle the extra traffic.

Hyannis sounds good too, but I think we need to rotate the 2009 NAs to another district outside of SNE for a year, unless nobody objects :-) It's not to far for Rhapsody!
