AEOLUS #085 was issued a National Vessel Documentation April 2010. On the application I listed the Hull number:TSP300850679.
Upon receiving the completed paper work, The Ship Builder and Year Built fields were empty. Communicating with the Director National Vessel Documentaion Center advises that in order to add this information, I need to provide the original Builder's Certification (CG-1261) or other original document containing the same information, executed by a person having personal knowledge of the facts of build because that person:
1. contructed the vessel; 2. supervised the actual construction of the vessel, or 3. is an official or employee of the company which built the vessel and has examined the records of the company concerning the facts of vessel construction.
Can anyone provide any guidance or personal experience in this matter?

I am thinking those first five digits are the hull number in your case 00085

Here's a good old thread that explains the hull numbers and date codes.

The hull number you have is as follows:
TSP300850679

TSP - Manufacturers code for Tilliston Pearson Inc.

30 - code for J/30 (sometimes this is 00)

085 - code for hull number 085

0679 - date code of manufacture June 1979

roger roger ... but the fact that the CG has a problem may indicate a data error somewhere in the CG database.

The original manufacturer's certificate input may have be "altered" by a misguided entry to the 000 of the later years.

so now the test will be to check the CG to see if
TSP000850679 will click in the automatic ship builder and year built fields that the 300 didn't.

In 505 and 526 ... the coast guard shows them built a year earlier than the numbers indicate.

TSP00505M85A for example the CG says was made in 84. which since I bought it at the 84 Newport boat show was correct.

TSP00526C585 was officially considered a 86, but built in 85 ...

so the point is, and with reference to the earlier thread ... with all this number confusion ... did someone input the data incorrectly, or are we ~30 years later trying to see if TPI has kept builder records through 3-4 ownership changes.

Let us know if you can get the certificate from TPI.

By the formula in the other thread, 505 was built August 1984. However the format for 526 appears to be a third variation after the model year version. I first saw this on 515 Avita (TSP00515K485) from the Chesapeake fleet.

I figure the ninth character is the month (for 526, C=October) and digits 11-12 are the model year 85, indicating build date for 526 of October 1984.

I think the Newport boat show is usually in September. So if Vic ordered 526 it may have been built in October. However if Vic bought the boat he saw at the show it was obviously built earlier.

Another problem with this suggestion is I have no explanation for the 10th digit. It has been reported to be 4 for 515 and 518, 5 for a six boats between 523 and 532, and 6 for seven boats between 534 and 546.

roger, roger ... 505 bought at Sept. boat show in 84 as Pirate Cove demo boat.

526 bought a couple of years ago as project boat ... but 526 had to be a 85 build as they weren't building them that fast ... perhaps oct. 85?

Actually my comment that they were both off a year above is wrong. 505 was built in 84, with a 1985 designation by the factory. and 526 was aparently built in 85 with an 1986 designation by the factory... But both show an 85 in the id number.

As a side note: Bob Johnstone stopped by the slip in Naples today. He's in town for the MJM power boat rendezvous next weekend. I think two J95s will be racing in the AVOW Hospice regatta next weekend. He was impressed we were out in gusts of 30mph this afternoon ... sustained beam reach GPS speed ~8. [reefed main and jenny]

No other changes or corrections were made to the existing document.

There is very little kept on file for our years, and the original certificates are probably not there. However, they do prepare Coast Guard form 1261 when requested. The fee is $25.00. They also take Visa, MC and AM Express.

Jerry,
Interested in your experiences with documentation. Nice Pear (#412)has a documentation number, however, the two owners previous to me did not bother to re document the boat. Any ideas of what I am up against to obtain a new vessel documents??
