I have a 1979 J30 with moisture meter readings in the 50's below the waterline. Can I safely sail this summer without fixing it right away?
Do I have to peel the bottom and replace the core to fix this?

My entire starboard side below the waterline reads wet too. I know I have wet core near the keel as I drilled a hole to drain the water. Got out over a gallon, then plugged the hole. The source for me is the exhaust - the transom stbd side sounds hollow (e.g. delamintaed). Just splashed last Thursday and it hasn't sunk yet! I plan on doing work next off-season. I say sail it.

What hull number do you have?

Here are some photos of the problem described below. I used a boat yard here in New Orleans to do the repair. This effectively saved our J/30 hull # 87.

I had a surveyor come and check out Blue J this week, after reading all these threads. Same diagnosis -- transom and aft starboard hull about to the water line. He checked the rest of the boat and found one stress point that needs immediate attention -- the starboard backstay chainplate mount. The rest, he advised, "just keeps water out" and should not stop US Sailing this year, like Rhapsody.
He told me how to go about repairing the chainplate attachment -- I'll try to get pictures. Basically, there's a triangular plywood doubler glassed into the inside corner of the transom that has rotted. I don't remember seeing this particular item in any threads, but since this can only be inspected by removing the small bulkhead at the foot of the quarter berth, it may escape detection in many cases.
Looks like I'm in for some major work next fall.
