Anyone had any experience rebuilding their J/30 rudder?
I wouldn't mind knowing the anatomy of the rudder before I start ripping it apart.

John McArthur (Smiles) had a new rudder fabricated and brought it to the Annapolis NAs for the Board of Governors to inspect. Physically, it looks identical to the stock J/30 Class rudder since it was built from templates. It is lighter though. There is an action for a Naval Architect to analyze the impact of rudder weight and determine if there should be a specification before approving the replacement rudder as an alternate source to one fabricated by TPI. John McArthur (Smiles) copied me on an email to Jason with pictures of the broken rudder, allowing the core and construction to be seen. I've posted the information with pictures below for all to see. Jason, Here's some pictures of a "Failed" J30 rudder from IdaSailor. IdaSailor made as rudder for me last year. Most of the J30 rudders I have checked out are in the 70 to 80 pound range "Wet". IdaSailor's rudder I purchase was 40#. Bill, I talked with Joel at Ida Sailor and he thinks it would be easy to make the new rudder weigh around 55-65#. Jason,
I just looked at the pictures on the blog from 2 Feb. I assume the next steps are to chisel out the old balsa, then cut new core in the shape of the section that was taken out. Is your plan to lay in new core with the "V" grooves up against the contour of the glass remaining in the rudder, then grind to match the contour on the open side? How many core pieces (e.g. what approx size) do you think will make up the new core? Nice documentation you've got on your blog. Keep up the good work & Good Luck!

I cleaned the balsa and ground down the rough edges on the glass...so I'm ready to start rebuilding.
A couple notes worth mentioning after looking at the broken rudder:
1) The rudder has a foam core (i think) that is shaped, then has balsa wood wrapped around this "shape". The balsa wood is uniformally 2 sizes: a) 1/4 inch balsa between 3.25 and 5.25 inches from the trailing edge (it's not shaped and is uniformally the same thickness). b) 1/2 inch balsa 5.25 inches from the trailing edge to the leading edge (it as well is not shaped and is uniformally the same thickness).
2) The balsa wood was so rotten that using the claw on a hammer I could just pull the balsa off...no chissel was required this time.

Oh...and another note...my rudder weighed 85 pounds before I split it....and my garbage can is REALLY heavy with rotten balsa....it will be interesting to see what it will weigh when I'm done. Other than layering solid glass where the hardware attaches I don't plan on doing anything special.
