I have a big regatta next weekend and am still considering/procrastinating changing my halyards. My main and jib halyard is led aft to the cockpit. The p measurment is 38 feet I have been told 50 feet is the right length. My guess is about 53 feet for the main and about 60 feet for the jib. I would like the main halyard long enough so I can use it for a topping lift sometimes(when I am not sailing and do not want the boom flying around). Is this right. I estimate that I would want to strip the cover about 42 feet from the shackle so the line outside the base of the mast is covered. Please reply soon so I can get started. Im looking at the vectran core -Yale crystalyne material from the APS catalog. thanks a bunch clint

Clint, your measurements sound way too short. Remember your need TWICE the distance from the deck to the upper mast block, plus the distance from the base of the mast back to the winch, plus the extra needed for handling. Take a look at the following article from this site. The table shows 102 ft. for the main halyard and 81 ft. for the headsail halyards. You can find it on the "Info" tab at the home page. wow! I cant believe i wrote that. My big question is if those measurments allow running the lines aft to the cockpit or were they cleated to the mast. Was the wire ran past the blocks at the base of the mast or did the wire stop at the exit in the mast. thanks, clint
